Cardinal McCarrick High School

The Coat-of-Arms of Cardinal McCarrick High School is maintained in the form of a seal inside a circle. The circle has a cross throughout separating it into four quadrants. This type of cross appears in both the former St. Mary' High School and now Theodore Cardinal McCarrick High School. Here it has been made slightly different by the inclusion of a circle at the cross point.

In the first quadrant the dove, representing the Holy Spirit, is seen descending. This is a symbol of the Wisdom of God.

The second quadrant shows the lion rampant taken from the Coat of Arms of Cardinal McCarrick. The lion, from the McLaughlin family is included in his arms to honor his mother's family.

The third quadrant shows a sunburst. Again, this is taken from the arms of Cardinal McCarrick who put it there to recall the happy years he spent ministering in Puerto Rico and other places in the Caribbean.

The fourth quadrant shows a book with a pen upon it. These are retained from the former St. Mary's logo and are symbols of learning.

At the center of the cross is the letter "M" surmounted by a crown. This is from the Coat of Arms of the Diocese of Metuchen. It is a symbol of Mary, Our Queen who is the patroness of the Diocese.

The logo was designed and executed by the Rev. Guy W. Selvester, a priest of the Diocese of Metuchen. Father Selvester is a noted heraldic artist who has designed heraldic symbols for prelates and institutions throughout the world, including many parishes within the Diocese and the third bishop of Metuchen, Vincent Breen.
