About CMHS Print

CARDINAL MCCARRICK HIGH SCHOOL – EDUCATING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Cardinal McCarrick/St. Mary’s High School in South Amboy is the oldest Catholic high school in the Diocese of Metuchen, originally opening its door on September 12, 1885, grades 9-11.  In 1918 St. Mary’s added the twelfth grade. In 1919 the school received full approval from the State of New Jersey.  Originally supported by St. Mary’s Parish, the High School became a Diocesan Regional High School in September 1987 officially being called St. Mary Regional High School.  Beginning with the school year September 2000 through June 2001, St. Mary’s Diocesan Regional High School was renamed St. Mary’s Diocesan High School.  In June, 2001, then Bishop Vincent Breen, renamed the high school Cardinal McCarrick HS in honor of the first bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen.

Today, Cardinal McCarrick HS continues to provide every student with an excellent, faith-filled   education in a compassionate and caring academic environment.  Our outstanding, well-prepared faculty members, including two religious sisters from the congregation of Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, are dedicated to helping every student succeed.  Parents and students alike often comment on their patience and willingness to “go the extra mile” to provide whatever academic help is needed.

Students from more than twenty surrounding communities and 18 Catholic elementary schools attend Cardinal McCarrick HS.  In a very short time, all feel part of the CMHS community.  As one student states, “Coming from a public school and switching to Cardinal McCarrick is the greatest decision of my life. It was very easy to become accustomed to the school and make many new friends since it’s so small. Additionally CMHS makes me feel like I’m a part of one big family.”

Most sending districts provide busing to our students, but for those who don’t, CMHS buses are available to transport students.  In addition, our proximity to the South Amboy train station and NJ Transit bus stops also help to make attending CMHS easy for most Middlesex and Monmouth County residents.

Cardinal McCarrick HS is a member of the Greater Middlesex Athletic Conference, with a full slate of competitive varsity sports for both boys and girls.  In recent years, our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been conference champions and reached the NJSIAA state semi-final tournament.  In 2009, the Eagle baseball team received the GMC Sportsmanship Award.  Cardinal McCarrick HS also offers a wide variety of student clubs and organizations, which reflect the academic and special interests of our students.

In September, 2009 we are launching our newest initiative, Educating for the 21st Century, which will help to ensure that each CMHS student continues to reach their greatest potential during high school and is well-prepared to meet the challenges they will face in the next decades.  Some of the highlights of this new initiative include:

Innovative College Advisory Program that develops personalized student achievement goals and involves counselors, teachers and parents in assuring students achieve these goals.

Formalized Academic Support Program linked to successful completion of personalized student achievement goals.

Enhanced College Testing Program that offers a variety of AP courses and preparation for SAT Subject Area Tests as well as PSAT, SAT and ACT tests.

Distance Learning Opportunities with on-line courses, virtual field trips and other 21st century technology opportunities.

Interdisciplinary Honors Program that connects Religion, English and World History classes through theme-based curricula.

Details about all of these programs can be found by clicking on the Academic and Guidance tabs above.
